The idea of looking younger and feeling stronger in a matter of minutes can seduce even the most disciplined and strong willed individual. Everyone wants to get great results as fast as possible and things don’t get any different when it comes to staying healthy and young. Anti aging hormones are being used by some people to achieve better health. But do they really work?
Give me some of that man stuff (Testosterone): Testosterone production predominantly starts to drop around the age of 30. Men experience a decrease in sex drive, bone loss, muscle loss and sometimes impotence due to low levels of testosterone. Furthermore, both men and women experience a decrease in energy levels with decreasing testosterone levels.
Since, low testosterone levels can lead to all the symptoms associated with aging its natural for people looking for a quick fix to use testosterone supplementation as a way to stay fit and young. But there is a risk involved with testosterone supplementation as it can lead to breast cancer and prostate enlargement in men.
For women testosterone supplementation can help with weight management and libido. But testosterone is predominantly a male hormone and women using testosterone can develop certain male characteristics such as facial hair and a deepened voice.
Grow those muscles for me (HGH): Human growth hormones or HGH serve the function of cell repair and growth in the body. The hormone is produced by the pituitary gland which starts to act lazy by the age of 40 and in the next 30 years (or by the age of 70) the production goes down by as much as 75 percent. Since, low levels of HGH are associated with symptoms such as weak and small muscles and low energy levels injecting HGH seems like the perfect way to reverse the aging process, right?
Well not really. People with a HGH deficiency experience an increase in muscle mass and a decrease in body fat after receiving HGH injections. But when it comes to people who have normal HGH levels, HGH supplementation does lead to an increase in muscle mass but is unaccompanied by an increase in strength. So, if you don’t have a HGH deficiency then HGH supplements to look younger and feel healthier is not the answer.
Dehydroep…what?: (Dehydroepiandrosterone): The adrenal gland is responsible for manufacturing this hormone. DHEA gets converted into either testosterone or estrogen. Hence, when DHEA levels drop so do the testosterone and estrogen levels leading to symptoms associated with aging. In theory increasing DHEA levels in the body can cause an improvement in muscle mass and bone density, boost the immune system and increase libido and energy levels.
But the story remains the same. Studies have demonstrated that only people with a DHEA deficiency may benefit from taking supplements of the hormone.
So, unless you have a deficiency hormone therapy posses major risks without providing any substantial gains. If you do have a deficiency then it is advisable to first discuss the right course of action with your doctor before going to the nearest drug store and stocking up the hormone of your choice.
